Digital Group Paintings

Suggested Group(s): Middle/Teens

Purpose: Group building

Task/need: Group building

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Ask, "If you could draw or paint anything you wanted, what would it be?"
  • Don't give much direction on this activity to start. Prepare the materials and space and let the group members have free reign (within reason) to create what they wish on the screen. Emphasize that they can paint anything (that is appropriate) in the space in front of them.

Materials:

  • iPad (enough for each person in the group to have one)
  • FlipInk

Description: The task is to ask group members to start a painting of anything they want on their iPads. After a minute or two, have them pass their iPad to their right and work on the new drawing for a couple of minutes (the drawing that the person sitting next to them started). Keep doing this until they have all had a chance to work on each painting.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

Process this task by asking questions:

  • Which "Painting" did they enjoy working on most?
  • Which were more difficult to add to?
  • Did they feel interrupted?
  • Was it difficult to "switch gears" and start on a new idea?
  • How similar/different were the end results?

Suggestions: You may have each person choose his or her favorite color to use throughout the task. In this way, they can really see what each person contributed to each painting.
