Feelings Release

Suggested Group(s): Teen/Adult

Purpose: To release uncomfortable feelings and share them in a supportive presence.

Task/need: Moving towards the pain of the loss, continued support

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Have the group think about feelings or uncomfortable/unpleasant thoughts they would like to let go.
  • Talk to the group to reinforce that the Caring Place is a safe place where all feelings can be discussed.
  • Reinforce that the group is here is support one another and that everyone in the group is here for a similar reason.

Materials:

  • One large sheet
  • One large plastic tarp or shower curtain liner
  • Tempura or other water based (soluble) paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Bucket of water balloons

Description:

  • Ask group members to paint words or messages on the sheet that describe the pain of their grief (e.g. anger, what worries or questions they have, etc.).
  • Discuss with the group members what it was like to paint the words on the sheet.
  • Instruct the group that they will throw water balloons at the sheet.
  • Process what it was like to throw the water balloons.
    • What happened to the paint?
  • Have the group brainstorm ways they can feel supported in carrying these types of feelings.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Summarize the ways the group members found support.
  • Thank the group for sharing their thoughts and feelings.

Suggestions: This activity needs to be done in a large space. Outdoors works best if it is feasible.
