My Support Bracelet/Necklace/Lanyard

Suggested Group(s): Young/Middle

Purpose: To have the group members think about who they have as part of their support system and give them a visual representation of the supports they have in their lives.

Task/need: Living on the grief spiral, experience continued support, develop a new self-identity

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Talk with group members about who in their lives provides support to them during difficult times. Are there people to whom they talk? Are there people they can call when they have a difficult day?

Materials:

  • Yarn or string
  • Different colored or shaped beads

Description: Each group member takes a length of string and picks beads to represent each person who supports them in their life. They can choose that person's favorite color or some other way to differentiate which person the bead represents. When they are finished, the string can be tied off and made into a bracelet/necklace/or lanyard for them to wear or so they have a visual reminder of the supports they have in their lives.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Invite group members to share their bracelets/necklaces and the meaning behind the beads
  • As always, thank the group for their hard work and sharing

Reminder: The concept of a necklace/bracelet lends itself to a female group. If not working with all girls in your group, consider making a lanyard or other more male-focused item so as not to lose the interest of the boys in your group.
