Who Helps You Caterpillar

Suggested Group(s): Young

Purpose: To help group members identify who is in their support system.

Task/need: Continued support

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Explain to group members that everyone needs support to get through hard times. It is good to have people to talk to or spend time with who will listen to us and help us feel better. It is important that when we feel sad or mad that we remember whom we can turn to when we need support.

Materials:

  • Round circles cut from different colors of construction paper
  • Glue
  • Markers

Description: Each group member is given different color circles. If the group member is able to write, they can write on their circles the names of the people in their life that they can turn to when they are sad or mad. If the group member is unable to write, they can tell the volunteer whose names they would like on the circles and the volunteer can write them on the circles. The group member then glues them down to a paper in the shape of a caterpillar and can draw a face and antennae on their caterpillar. If the group member has a hard time coming up with people to add to their caterpillar, the volunteer can ask if there are family members, teachers, babysitters, etc. who might be a support for the child.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Invite the group members to share their caterpillar.
  • Encourage children to take their caterpillar home to remind them of the supports that they have in their lives.
