Wish Wands

Suggested Group(s): *Preschool/Young/Middle

Purpose: Can be used as a closing activity for a group. To share wishes that group members have for others or the group member may have for the person who died, for themselves or for the world, etc.

Task/need: Living on the grief spiral, group structure, experiencing continued support

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Ask, "Do you ever wish that you had a magic wand that would make wishes come true?"
  • "Can you think of a few things that you would wish for if you did?"
  • Discuss
  • Tonight is our last night together. Tonight we are going to make magic wands and make wishes for each other and the people in our lives who died.

Materials:

  • Wooden dowels
  • Markers
  • Ribbon

Description: Let the group members know that they will be building wish wands that will represent the wishes that they have for the person who died, for themselves, for their group, for the world or wishes that deceased person may have for them. Allow them to decorate their wands in any way that they wish.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Allow the group members to share their wands and the wishes that go along with them
  • As a group closing activity, allow group members to share wishes that they have for the rest of the group

Note: This activity may be appropriate for an older group of preschool children. Please check with staff before planning this activity in a preschool room.
