Feelings Memory
Suggested Group(s): Young
Purpose: To assist young children in identifying feelings
Task/need: Group building, approaching the pain of the loss
Activity Setup Ideas:
- Ask the children if they know what a feeling is. Have a brief discussion about what feelings are and help the kids think of a few different feelings.
- Then let the group know that they will be playing a game where you have to match feelings. Describe the rules of memory and begin the game.
Materials:
- One set of 10-20 feelings cards made of 5-10 matching pairs of feelings words or drawings (for younger children, drawings are preferable)
Description: Place twenty (two of each feeling) cards face down on a table, and allow children to turn two cards over at a time to try to find a match. If a match is found, the child takes the matched cards and tries two additional cards. If a match is not found, the unmatched cards are turned face down, and the next player tries to find a match.
When a matched pair is found, have the group discuss a time when they have felt that feeling.
Activity Wrap Up Ideas:
- Congratulate the kids on making the matches that they have made and talk a bit about different feelings that they have had.
- As always thank the group members for their participation.
