Grief Quotes
Suggest Group(s): Teen, Adult
Purpose: To give group members the opportunity to discuss different grief perspectives
Task/need: Moving toward the pain of the loss, converting the relationship from presence to memory, developing a new self-identity, living on the grief spiral
Activity Setup Ideas:
- Tell the group you found various quotes that deal with grief.
- Read the quote or have group members read it then ask if they agree/disagree.
Materials:
- Grief Quotes Basket/Box or,
- Grief Quotes Flash Cards or,
- Grief Quotes Handout
Description:
- Handouts: Each group member receives a handout with various grief quotes and may select one (or several) to discuss (agree or disagree).
- Flash Cards: Facilitator holds flash cards and reads grief quotes to the group members and asks, "Do you agree or disagree with this quote?" Group members then discuss their opinions.
- Basket/Box: Grief quotes are typed on small strips of paper and the basket/box is passed around to each group member to retrieve a quote for discussion. (Facilitators may retain handout copy for reference)
Grief Quotes may also be categorized as follows: General Grief, Feelings, Memories, Hope/Support
Activity Wrap Up Ideas: Give each group member the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings regarding each grief quote. Allow time to explore other perspectives regarding grief.
Suggestions: Grief quotes may be used throughout the eight or ten week sessions. For example, if the topic for discussion for Week #3 is feelings, use the feelings related grief quotes. Week #4 topic may be memories so facilitators may use the memory related grief quotes. Hope/Support grief quotes would be appropriate for discussion toward the end of the eight or ten week sessions.
Grief quotes are appropriate for use in single or multiple sessions.
