Airplane Messages

Suggested Group(s): Young/Middle

Purpose: To allow the group members a way to express their thoughts and feelings to their family member.

Task/need: Converting the relationship…to one of memory, living on the grief spiral

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Begin by stating that, "sometimes when a person dies, we miss the things that we could have done with or said to that person." Ask, "can you think of some things that, if you had the chance, you would like to say to the person in your life who died?"

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Pens, pencils or markers

Description: Have the group members make a paper airplane. Have them write a message to their family member on the wings. This message can be something they’d like to say to them or something they’d like to tell them about their lives now.

In the forum, have them go to the highest riser and launch their paper airplane.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Discuss this as one way of staying connected to the person who died. Ask the group to brainstorm about other ways that they might find beneficial to stay connected.
