Capes
Suggested Group(s): Pre-School, Young
Purpose: To allow kids to discuss their own superpowers and learn commonalities; also to discuss wishes related to their person who died
Task/need: Group structure, living on the Grief Spiral
Activity Setup Ideas:
Ask kids to choose a costume of their favorite superhero or character. Ask what they like most about their character/hero. Discuss characteristics that they like about themselves and how those qualities are their superpowers. What were some qualities of their person did they like most? Explain they are going to create a cape to show their superpowers.
You may also want to consider reading the book, The Cape, to your group.
Prompts to consider as kids create their capes:
- What are your superpowers?
- How did you get your superpowers?
- How do your superpowers work?
- What superpowers did their person have?
Materials:
- Fabric capes
- Letters
- Red Hearts
- Butterflies
Description: Have group decorate their capes with the letters, hearts, and butterflies. After they are finished decorating, ask them to share with the group how they decorated their cape. Have them share with the group about their superpowers.
Activity Wrap Up Ideas:
Ask the group what it was like to share about their capes. Were there other kids with similar superpowers? If so, what is it like to learn that others have the same powers? What did they learn about the other kids? What did they learn about the special people who died?
