Emotion Dice
Suggested Age Group(s): Young, Middle, Teen
Purpose: To acknowledge the range of feelings grief may bring; to give name to the various physical accompanying feelings; to encourage expression through sharing; to explore ways to cope with feelings
Task/need: Moving toward the pain of the loss, Living on the grief spiral
Activity Setup Ideas:
Materials:
- Colored dice with a different feeling written on each side
- If using plain colored dice, color code paper cards with feelings written on them to correspond to the dice roll or write a different feeling on each side of a plain dice
- Regular dice may be used with feelings coded by number
Description:
- Variation 1: One group member at a time takes turns rolling the emotion dice. She/he can choose which of the two feelings to share. Notice there is one side of the die that gives the option of a free choice. Group members share a time they experienced that feeling.
- Variation 2: Group members take turns rolling the dice. They choose one of the feelings to act out. They share the last time they had that feeling and a situation that triggers that feeling for them. Group members share what they did to cope with the feelings in that situation.
Activity Wrap Up Ideas:
- Ask the children what it was like to share all of their feelings.
- Thank them for sharing.
