Feeling Squares
Suggested Age Group(s): Middle, Teen
Purpose: To help group members identify feelings, process feelings, and learn coping skills.
Task/need: Moving toward the pain of the loss
Activity Setup Ideas: Have different feelings words cut up and placed in separate envelopes for each word. Brainstorm a list of feelings words with group members and talk about times when they may have felt that way.
Materials:
- Paper
- Pencils
- Markers
- Scissors
- Glue
- Magazines
Description: Instruct the group to fold the paper into 4 sections so that there are 4 boxes. Pass out envelopes so that each member has a feelings word. Explain the following chart:
Synonyms of the word (upper left quadrant). Pictures from magazines that represent the word (upper right quadrant). How it feels or what I look like when I have this feeling (lower left quadrant). Things you can do when you feel this way (lower right quadrant).
Do each section at a time with the group so that the group is working together on each square.
Activity Wrap Up Ideas: Have group members share their finished paper and have other group menbers guess the feeling word they did. Process with the group the different feelings they have and spend time discussing the coping section with one another.
