Feelings Dance

Suggested Age Group(s): Young/Middle/Teen

Purpose: To allow the group to express their feelings about their loss utilizing a physical form of expression.

Task/need: Moving toward the pain of the loss

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Have the group identify various feelings that they have experienced since the death of their loved one (ex. anger, sadness, relief).
  • Talk about the ways they have expressed their feelings both physically and verbally.

Materials:

  • No materials needed.

Description:

  • Have the children select one of the feelings that they identified.
  • Allow the group to work together and encourage each child to identify a physical gesture and a verbal expression of that feeling.
  • Instruct the children to create a group dance using these gestures and encourage them to give their dance a name. When they are ready, have them share their dance.
  • Repeat with other feelings.

  • Talk about how they felt when participating in this activity.
  • Did they learn anything from one another?
  • Thank the group for sharing their thoughts and feelings.
