Feelings Spinners

Suggested Group(s): Young/Middle/Teen/Adult

Purpose: Identifying and managing difficult feelings

Task/need: Moving toward the pain of the loss, living on the grief spiral

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Brainstorm and create a list of feelings they have experience since the loss
  • Discuss methods they have used to manage those feelings

Materials:

  • Colored paper
  • String
  • Spoke Template
  • Glue Stick
  • Markers

Description:

  • Cut out 6 different colored spoke templates.
  • Glue each spoke to the next.
  • Before gluing the last spoke together, thread string through the middle.
  • Tie a bead to each end of the string, which makes it easier to hold and stops the string from coming out.
  • Have group members write a feeling they have experience since the loss on each color of the spinner.
  • Hold each end of string and blow onto spinner. The colors will run together, much like their feelings in times of loss.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Discuss the use of breathing as a coping skill to manage feelings.
