Kindness Rocks Project

Suggested Age Group(s): All

Purpose: To demonstrate kindness comes in many forms, give the gift of hope and inspiration to others

Task/need: Relate the loss to a context of meaning, continued support

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Talk to the group about things that were comforting to them after the loss
  • Ask what may be helpful or hopeful for others in the same situation. Then make a list of words/sayings that can inspire someone

Materials:

  • 1-3 inch beach rocks/pebbles
  • Paint
  • Shellac
  • Photo examples from Pinterest, video of how it started (Kindness Rocks Project)

Description: Speak about kindness, empathy, caring about others. Have group members decide what messages to paint on their rocks. Make a list of random places you can leave the rocks. Point out that they may or may not see who picks it up, but hopefully that person will leave an inspirational message for someone else.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas: Ask group members to share their rock and to explain the reason they chose their inspirational message. What will it be like for them to leave their rock behind? Where did they decide to leave it?

Adaptation: Use this activity as a closing ritual on the last night of group. Have group members paint kind or inspirational words/phrases pertaining to their group experience. Have group members choose a rock to take home with them as a reminder of their time spent at the Caring Place.
