Puppet Shows

Purpose: To use puppets to explore different themes on the grief spiral

Task/need: Living on the grief spiral

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Introduce the topic chosen for the puppet show and discuss.

Materials:

  • Puppets from the young room or
  • Socks, eyes and felt to make new puppets

Description: Puppet shows can be used for a variety of purposes. Have the group split into smaller groups of 2 or 3, with one volunteer for each group. Encourage the group members to create their own puppet show focused on one of the following topics:

  • Feelings
  • Supporting/receiving support
  • A funeral
  • Memories with the people who died
  • What they would say to the person who died
  • Any others as appropriate…

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Encourage supportive comments from the group to the "puppeteers"
  • Point out similarities in the shows
  • Thank the children for their hard work
