Memorial Stone Jar

Purpose: Group building, sense of community, learning they are not alone in their grief
Task/need: Acknowledge the reality of the death, Convert the relationship to one of memory, Develop a new self identity based on life without the person who died, Continued support
Activity Setup Ideas: Invite family members to write their loved ones name on a rock and add to the memorial jar
Materials:
- Clear glass jar
- Smooth rocks
- Sharpies
Description: Have group members write their loved ones name on a rock and add to the memorial jar. This will help to send a message that they are not alone, others are grieving too and help to build a sense of community.
Activity Wrap Up Ideas: The jar of rocks can be incorporated into a closing ceremony for your group or can be left in child/adult room for other groups to add rocks, to allow for the understanding that there is a bigger community of grieving children and adults in addition to their small group.
