Yarn Web Sharing

Suggested Group(s): Young/Middle/Teen

Purpose: To promote sharing on a variety of topics

Task/need: Group structure, acknowledging the reality of the loss

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Begin by asking the group what brings them together or what connects them (their loss, their feelings, etc)

Materials:

  • A ball of yarn

Description: Have the group members form a circle. Begin with a sharing topic (see below) and ask the group members to share something on that topic one by one as they pass the ball of yarn from person to person. A web is formed as group members hold on to the end of the yarn with one hand while tossing it to other group members with the other.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Point out the common 'threads' that connect group members and were found through sharing
  • Thank the group members for sharing

Potential Sharing Topics:

  • Changes that have taken place since the family member has died
  • Memories about the family member
  • Things that the group members had in common with their family member who died
  • Any other sharing topic
