Butterfly Quiz Show

Suggested Group(s): Young/Middle/Teen

Purpose: To encourage sharing of experiences and feelings

Task/need: This activity can address any of the spiral tasks/needs depending on the questions included

Activity Setup Ideas:

  • Ask, "How many people have seen the game show Jeopardy™ on television?" Let the group know that you will be playing your own version of a game show like Jeopardy™ with questions about topics related to why they come to the Caring Place.

Materials:

  • Butterflies or small object for each child in the group
  • The jeopardy chart drawn on the write-on board
  • A large chart would also do
  • Construction paper or plain white paper for questions

Description: Put the butterflies across the top of the board. Under the butterflies spell out the word HEART putting one letter under each butterfly. If you needed more than five, you could come up with a different word to use. (Try to use one associated with their feelings.) Under each butterfly, write five different questions pertaining to five different categories such as "feelings," "friends," "the person who died," "about me," and "family." The questions were on paper and were facing the wall so no one knew what the question would be in the category they picked. The object of the game is to eliminate all the questions under each butterfly.

Optional: The person who answers the last question gets the butterfly at the top of that column. Using different colors of butterflies may entice them to answer more questions in order to get the color they wanted. After each person answers their question, open it up to the group for any additional comments.

Activity Wrap Up Ideas:

  • Let the group know that since they took the risk of coming to the Caring Place, they are all winners and they each can have some time in the activities room or free play to honor their work.
